Grok vs ChatGPT (2026): Which AI Assistant Is Right for You?

Grok vs ChatGPT 2026 comparison: Grok with live X search and Grok Bot from $30 a month, ChatGPT with unlimited free text chats and Plus at $20 a month

Short answer: Neither one is “better” for everybody. ChatGPT has the more generous free plan (unlimited everyday text chats), a $20 plan with a strong do-the-work mode, and features like Study mode. Grok stands out for live answers from X, short video generation, and a lower price for an always-on AI helper: Grok Bot comes with the $30 Premium plan, while ChatGPT’s always-on agent, called a dot, starts with Pro at $100. Pick the one that fits how you’ll actually use it, or try both free.

“Is Grok better than ChatGPT?” is one of the most searched questions about Grok. Honestly, most comparisons online lean on benchmark charts or gut feelings. This one doesn’t. It compares what each company officially says you get, what it costs, and who each one suits. If you’re brand new, start with our guide to what Grok is.

Grok and ChatGPT in one minute

  • Grok is the AI assistant from SpaceXSI (formerly xAI). You can use it at grok.com, in the Grok apps, inside X, and in some Tesla cars. Its paid plans come with The X Subscription, which also bundles Grok Bot, the Cursor coding tools, and X Premium perks.
  • ChatGPT is the AI assistant from OpenAI. You can use it at chatgpt.com and in its web, desktop, and mobile apps. It now has three modes: Chat for quick answers, Work, an agent for longer jobs and finished files, and Codex for coding.

Both can chat by text or voice, search the web, make images, read your files, remember your preferences, and connect to apps like Gmail.

Prices compared

Grok (The X Subscription): Free $0 · Plus $8 · Premium $30 ($300/yr) · Super $100 ($1,000/yr) · Ultra $200 ($2,000/yr). Grok Bot is included from Premium up, but not on Free or Plus. All of Grok, Grok Bot, and Cursor share one weekly usage pool. For the full breakdown, see our guide to Grok Bot pricing and which plan includes it.

ChatGPT: Free $0 · Go $8 (US) · Plus $20 · Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200, Pro 500 at $500. OpenAI’s help pages say Go, Plus, and Pro are billed monthly, with no yearly option. Business plans start at 2 users.

What that means at each budget:

  • $0: ChatGPT’s free plan gives you unlimited everyday text chats. Grok’s free plan is “limited,” and the company doesn’t publish exact numbers.
  • $8: Both have an $8 plan. Grok Plus adds X perks like the checkmark and fewer ads on X. ChatGPT Go may show ads.
  • $20 to $30: ChatGPT Plus ($20) gets you full ChatGPT Work, an agent for research and deliverables. Grok Premium ($30) gets you Grok Bot, a team of always-on AI helpers, plus full X Premium+ perks.
  • $100 and up: ChatGPT Pro is where dots, its always-on agent, live. Grok Super and Ultra mainly add a bigger usage pool.

Where ChatGPT is stronger

  • The free plan. Unlimited everyday text chats is a real advantage if you don’t want to pay anything.
  • A cheaper agent for one-off jobs. ChatGPT Work is fully included on the $20 Plus plan. It can research, analyze, and create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and simple websites, and it can run on a schedule or when something happens in Gmail, Slack, or GitHub.
  • Learning tools. Study mode is on every plan, including Free.
  • More plan choices. Go, Plus, three Pro tiers, and Business plans from 2 users. OpenAI also offers a free plan for verified US K–12 teachers through June 2027.
  • A big app ecosystem. OpenAI says its plugins connect to over 4,000 apps.

Where Grok is stronger

  • Live X. Grok searches public X posts in real time, along with the web. If you follow news, trends, or creators on X, that’s a natural fit.
  • Video. Grok Imagine makes short videos up to 15 seconds long. ChatGPT’s pricing page doesn’t list video generation, and OpenAI shut down the Sora app in April 2026.
  • A cheaper always-on helper. Grok Bot comes with the $30 Premium plan. Your Bots work on their own cloud computer (with a browser, files, and a terminal), work across your apps and websites, keep going after you close your laptop, and ask before sensitive steps. ChatGPT’s comparable feature, dots, needs a Pro plan at $100 or more and isn’t available in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland yet. More on what Grok Bot is.
  • One bill for more things. Premium includes Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor, and full X Premium+ perks. The company says those were “previously $90/month combined.”
  • Yearly plans. Grok’s paid plans can be paid yearly. Premium at $300 a year works out to about $25 a month.
  • Your car. Grok also works in supported Tesla vehicles.

Where they’re about even

  • Voice, images, files, memory, and app connections: both have them. The details differ by plan.
  • Doing tasks on a schedule: Grok has Automations, and ChatGPT has Scheduled tasks (Go and up).
  • Privacy controls: both let you turn off training on your chats and use an off-the-record chat mode (details below).
  • Mistakes: both companies say their AI can be wrong. Check anything important.

ChatGPT vs Grok Bot: the “do it for me” agents

This is the newest and most confusing part, so here’s a plain map:

  • Grok (chat) is like ChatGPT Chat: you ask, and it answers.
  • Grok Bot is closest to ChatGPT dots. Both are always-on agents that work on a cloud computer with a browser. They keep working while your devices are off, use your connected apps, and come back to you when something needs your approval.
  • ChatGPT Work sits in between. It’s an agent for a specific job, like “research these five vendors and make me a spreadsheet,” which you can run now or on a schedule.

The big practical difference is price and availability. Grok Bot starts at $30 a month. Dots start at $100 a month (Pro), are for users over 18, and aren’t offered in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland yet. OpenAI also says dots are “rolling out gradually,” so an eligible plan doesn’t guarantee you’ll see them right away.

Which should you pick?

These suggestions are based on features and price, not on which one “sounds smarter.” Your own trial is the real test.

  • Busy parent: If you mostly want answers, meal plans, and help with school emails, ChatGPT Free or Grok Free will do. If you want something that handles the family admin in the background, Grok Premium ($30) is the cheaper way to get an always-on helper.
  • Freelancer: For proposals, research, and client files, ChatGPT Plus ($20) with Work is strong value. If you want an assistant that keeps running your inbox and follow-ups every day, Grok Premium with Grok Bot fits better.
  • Small business: Both have team plans. Grok team plans start at $30 per user per month, and each member can have a Premium, Super, or Ultra seat. ChatGPT Business starts at 2 users (check OpenAI’s Business pricing page for the current seat price). If your business lives on X, Grok’s live X search and the included X perks are a plus.
  • Student: For college and adult students, ChatGPT has the edge, with Study mode on every plan, including Free. Check your school’s AI rules either way. Both services have the same minimum age: 13, and teens under 18 need a parent’s or guardian’s permission. Common Sense Media’s Youth AI Safety Institute rated both Grok (January 2026) and ChatGPT for Teens (October 2026) an “Unacceptable Risk” for kids under 18. More in the privacy and teen safety section below.
  • Creator: Grok is the natural pick if you make short videos or work on X, since it has Imagine video and live X trends. ChatGPT is great for scripts, captions, and images.

Can you use both?

Yes, and plenty of people do. A simple, low-cost setup:

  • Use ChatGPT Free for everyday questions, writing help, and studying.
  • Use Grok Free when you want to know what people on X are saying right now.
  • Pay for one of them only when you hit a limit or need an agent, then choose based on the agent you want: ChatGPT Work at $20 or Grok Bot at $30.

Just remember they don’t share memory, so each one learns your preferences separately.

Privacy and teen safety

Grok:

  • To stop your chats being used for training, go to Settings → Data Controls in the app and turn off “Improve the model,” or Settings → Data on grok.com.
  • Private Chat (the ghost icon) isn’t saved to your history, isn’t used for training, and is deleted within 30 days.
  • Using Grok on X follows X’s own privacy policy.

ChatGPT:

  • To stop your chats being used for training, go to Settings → Data controls and turn off “Improve the model for everyone.”
  • A temporary chat stays out of your history, doesn’t create memories, and isn’t used for training. OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety.
  • You can review, edit, or turn off memory at any time.

Teens and families:

  • Minimum age: Both require users to be at least 13. Grok’s FAQ says teens 13 to 17 need a parent’s or legal guardian’s permission. OpenAI’s Terms of Use say anyone under 18 needs a parent’s or legal guardian’s permission, and the minimum is higher in countries that set one.
  • ChatGPT parental controls: A parent can link their account to a teen’s account. From there they can reduce sensitive content, turn off voice, image creation, or memory, set study hours, and set quiet hours when ChatGPT can’t be used. Parents can’t read their teen’s chats. OpenAI may send a parent a safety alert in limited, serious situations, such as a self-harm concern. Either the parent or the teen can unlink the accounts.
  • Grok: SpaceXSI’s consumer FAQ covers the age and permission rule but doesn’t describe parental controls.
  • Independent ratings: Common Sense Media’s Youth AI Safety Institute rated both products “Unacceptable Risk” for kids under 18: Grok in January 2026 and ChatGPT for Teens in October 2026. Its ChatGPT review says some of the new teen protections didn’t work reliably in its testing.

With either one, don’t share passwords, account numbers, or medical details you wouldn’t want stored.
